From the Lily Pad last night. Mali Sastri:
… and Claire Davies:
Copal recently released their newest album, “Into the Shadow Garden”. The lineup for their release party in Cambridge was excellent – Bury Me Standing, Sxip Shirey, and performances by the Vadalna Tribal Dance Company during Copal’s set.
Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band asked me to follow them at the fifth Honk!, a festival of activist street bands. The best word to describe that weekend has to be “Epic”. We started off with a pre-festival wedding, officiated by Chuck himself:
Emperor Norton’s then took the main stage at Statue Park right in the middle of Davis Square. It wasn’t until later when we saw video someone had posted on Youtube just how many people were crammed into Davis for it!
There was a second set that night just outside of Davis. After ENSMB finished their first set, they moved onto the playground for a few more!
The following day was the parade from Davis Square down Mass Ave to Harvard Square. They had even more stilt dancers (from Mortal Beasts and Deities), spinners, jugglers, and dancers than the previous day!
Is there any band other than Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys that could simultaneously add class and an inflatable monkey to an awards ceremony? I think not. From the Boston Music Awards:
Taken sometime earlier this year. Rolleicord IV, Tri-X 400. Unknown exposure, but probably 1/250th @ f/5.6-f/8

A preview of Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band at this year’s Honk! I’m about half finished with these, more to come soon (I hope).
Two of my favorite bands, Jaggery and Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys, pulled out all of the stops when they performed together at Amanda Palmer’s Late Night Fucking Cabaret on October 12th.
The Army of Toys added new theatrical acts to their usual repertoire, all superbly done. Personally, I shouted myself hoarse during Off With Her Head (which was one of the pieces that received new theatrics!)
Rounding out the night was Amanda Palmer’s set, especially notable for the guest performance by Neil Gaiman (who was singing, not playing tambourine nor chainsaw).
An excellent show. The last Late Night Fucking Cabaret is October 27th.
